At Bells Mill, we use a problem solving strategy called DeBug. When a student is being "bugged" by another student, there are five steps they can use to resolve the problem. They are:
1. Decide to ignore 2. Exit, move away 3. Be friendly 4. Use firm talk 5. Get adult help
It is the expectation that students use the DeBug strategy for kid-size problems. (A kid-sized problem is any problem that can be solved by a kindergartener and is not a "big deal.") We will work on learning each of these skills over the course of our year, with the hope that first graders will eventually be able to apply them on their own.
Some problems are not "kid-size" though. If a child is physically attacked such as hitting, kicking etc., or threatened, then they are to skip all the other steps and get adult help immediately.
You can encourage your child to work on these strategies at home, during play dates, or when talking about events from the day.
