Remember- these are words that we cannot fully sound out YET. There is a part we must know by heart. We draw a heart over this part of the word to help us remember.
Ideas to practice words at home:
- Make 2 sets of cards with the words on them and play memory
- Make 2 sets of cards and play "war." Each player gets turns over a card. The first person to read the card gets to keep both of them.
- Make the words with playdough
- Spell the words with a flashlight
- Hop the words (ex. can--- c(hop) a (hop) n(hop) can (hop)
- Make a set of flashcards and hide them around a room. Go on a scavenger hunt to find them
- Play tic tac toe and instead of using x and o fill in the board with words
- Go on a word hunt. Look for the words in a book or newspaper.
- Rainbow write the words. Use a different color for each letter of the word.
- Turn the words into a song or say them to a beat.
- Have a spelling race. See who can write the word the fastest.
- Write the words in chalk.
- Look for the letters in magazines and cut them out. Spell the words with the letters you found.
- Type your words on the computer.
- Give Mom or Dad a "spelling test" and then check their work
- Make your own word wall at home
- Make a card for each word. Lay the cards out on the floor in a path. Have your child walk the path and read each word.
