What's Happening in our Class?!?
The latest and greatest on first grade fun!
This week we are adding two digit numbers to a multiple of ten. We are using what we know about place value to solve these problems. We are adding the tens and ones. Below is a video of what this looks like... Note: We are using base ten blocks to model this instead of circle chips.

We learned that there are actually 8 related facts that can be created from 3 numbers. (We previously focused on there being 4 facts.) We are working on writing these facts multiple ways and making sure they make sense. We are still developing our understanding of the equal sign and benefit from reminders to check where the equal sign is. We are also still tricked by problems that look like this:
1 = 6 - 5 many students prefer to write this problem like this: 1 = 5 - 6 because they read from the outside in. We are separating out the problems and making sure they make sense on their own 5 - 6 does not make sense! We are also working on finding the missing number when it is the whole number missing. Here is an example of some of our work. In order to get ready for our writing celebration we worked with our buddies to edit our writing. It is easy for us to find other people's mistakes but much harder to find our own. We helped our friends to fix up their writing. We checked for correct capital letters, punctuation and that our word wall words were spelled correctly. Unfortunately the copier was not working on this special day. Instead of making crafts or fun Dr. Seuss hats we played musical reading chairs. Here are some pictures from the fun!
