Today we learned about the counting up strategy. When we use the counting up strategy we turn a subtraction problem into an addition problem. Then we count up to find the answer.
Here is an example of how it works.

We are learning all about the main topic. We used a graphic organizer to identify key details from the text. We paused after reading 2 pages and identified the most important fact (key detail) and added it to our organizer. Then we used the key details to identify the main topic.
Today we identified related facts (also known as fact or number families). We are working on identifying all the facts associated with a number bond. The students are great at identifying problems that start like this ___ + ____ = ____. However when you turn it around and say ____ = ____ + ____ it becomes much trickier. Here is a visual for you to understand. You can help your first grader at home with this!!
Oops! I forgot to post these pictures from a few weeks ago! We used nonstandard units to measure the length of our friends. Here are some pictures from the fun!
We used repeated measurement to figure out the length of objects. When we use repeated measurement we only use one nonstandard unit to measure and have to move it down the object. We have to keep track of how many units long the object is because we cannot go back and count after.
To practice, we used a paperclip in playdough. We measured how long our snake was with one paperclip. In science (and social studies) we are learning about natural and human made features. Since the weather was so amazing, we went outside and made some observations about the environment around us. We identified things that were natural and things that were made by humans. Here are some pictures of the fun!
In math we are focusing on measurement. We learned the rules of measuring with nonstandard units.
1. start at one end and go all the way to the other 2. make sure the units are exactly the same size 3. make sure the units touch when you measure 4. line the units up in a straight line We began the math unit by comparing objects using the words longer and shorter... NOT BIG AND SMALL!! Here are some pictures from the fun! |
