This week in math we are breaking apart the numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9. We are showing them in as many ways as possible. We found all the ways to make a number. Here are all the ways to make 7. Ask your first grader to tell you how to make 7. How many ways can you make 7?
In social studies we are learning about leaders. We learned that leaders have authority. We learned what the word authority means and used the Frayer model to show the meaning of the word. Ask your first grader what authority means. Who has authority at school? At home?
Today we met with Mrs. White's 4th grade class. We met our bear cub buddy. We introduced ourselves to our buddy, then we asked them questions. When we finished we read books together. Ask your first grader to tell you something they learned about their new buddy!
This week we continued to analyze the characters feelings. Today we identified the characters feelings in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Then we used evidence from the story to explain how we knew the character's feelings. Everyone illustrated Lilly's feelings and then used evidence. We will continue to work on this in our reading groups next week. We will read books at our own level and then have to find evidence to support how we know!

We are using words to describe how the character acts, thinks, and feels. We are using examples from the story to support our thinking. Here is our description of Lilly from Julius The Baby of the World. We described her feelings in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Then we created our own Lily picture. Here is an example. When reading books at home, spend time identifying how the character is feeling throughout the text. Identify how the character's emotions change. Ask your first grader: How do you know? What in the story tells you?
