In writing workshop we learned how to start and end sentences. We learned that every sentence (and question) starts with a capital letter. We end each one with a period or question mark. You can help your first grader remember correct capitalization and punctuation!! Here is a fun video about punctuation that we watched today. This week we are working on unfreezing our characters. When we unfreeze the characters it makes them come alive. We learned that authors make the characters talk and make them move. We included speech bubbles in our writing. We also wrote about how the character was moving.
Today we learned about pictographs. We identified the parts of a pictograph and then we created one as a class. We learned that a pictograph needs to include a title, choices and a key. Here is the pictograph we made as a class.
Today we talked about the meaning of the equal sign. Many first graders think the equal sign means the answer, or the amount is. Today we learned that the equal sign means the same amount. Whatever is on one side of the equal sign needs to be the same amount as the other side. 3 = 2 + 1 2 + 2 = 3 + 1 Here is a silly video about the equal sign. We had a blast singing out song about Abraham Lincoln. Here are some pictures from our performance yesterday.
We know that good readers ask questions before, during and after reading a book. This can be hard for first graders because we like to tell what WE know and what WE think will happen. We are working on using our questioning words (who, what, where, when, why, how) to ask questions. We watched this video about asking questions today. Today we learned some more word wall words. We also worked on our handwriting. We are making sure to start our letters from the top!! After practicing we played a fun game with our word wall words. You can ask your first grader how we play! Today we started to decompose numbers. We started with 6 and made as many number pairs as possible. We found that there are 7 ways to make 6. We also made 7. We found that there are 8 ways to make 7. Tomorrow we are going to make 8. Good mathematicians solve problems in many ways and can come up with many solutions. We also started to talk about the equal sign. Many students think that number sentences have to be written this way:
6 + 1 = 7 but it can also be written 7 = 6 + 1 Check out all the ways we made 6 below. |
