What's Happening in our Class?!?
The latest and greatest on first grade fun!
This week in math we continued to work on adding 2 digit numbers. It might seem like we have been working on this for a whole (because we have!) but there is so much to cover with this concept. We are working to build a strong foundation for future math concepts. We have learned multiple ways to solve these problems. We can use tens and ones, 100s charts, count on, make a 10, add the ones and then add the tens. This week we focused on adding 2 digit numbers where you can't add the ones and get just ones. 49 + 23= In this example if I add the ones I will get 12 which has too many digits to fit in the ones column. We learned that for these problems we must compose a ten. (These are traditionally the problems that we were taught the "regrouping" strategy.) We used tens and ones to demonstrate this strategy. Here is a visual.... As you can see in this problem, we could not just add up the ones and then add up the tens. Instead we represented each number with tens and ones. Then we "regrouped" or composed a ten in the ones and moved it over into the tens column. We then counted up our new sets of tens and ones to get the answer.
Doing the math work this way, requires the first graders to understand the math happening in the regrouping strategy.

In marking period 3 we worked hard to identify human made and natural features. We used our knowledge to create a playground. We designed and built our playgrounds, making sure to include human and natural features. Here are some pictures from the fun.
We spent the end of the 3rd marking period working on adding and subtracting double digit numbers. We are continuing to work on this skill. Most of us learned how to add double digit numbers by lining the numbers up and adding down the column. Like this.... Students are able to choose from a variety of strategies to solve these problems but they MUST be able to explain their reasoning using tens and ones. We are laying a strong foundation so first graders can apply the skills and strategies we are learning now to problems throughout their elementary school career.
