This week in writing workshop we are writing about an aspect of our culture. Today we collaborated with a group to come up with all the different aspects of our culture. We shared out our ideas. Here is what we came up with... Tomorrow we will select a topic from our list of ideas and begin to plan our writing. We are writing informational text, which means we will right FACTS. We are going to use an introductory sentence and a closing statement.

First graders are really taking off in their writing. Their stamina is improving and they can add lots of words and thoughts to the page. However, most are not stopping to think about punctuation and capital letters. This week we did a lot of shared writing to focus on punctuation and capital letters. Here is an example of what we did today. The class shared the pen and re-wrote the sentence correctly. ![]() You can help your first grader at home by asking them to fix his/her mistakes. Instead of telling them where to put periods and capital letters, ask THEM where they are needed. This starts to put the ownership on your child!!!
Today we had our first shared discussion. Junior Great Books culminates with a shared conversation about the story. We spent all of last week reading, studying and analyzing the text in preparation for our discussion. We created rules for our discussion. It was hard for the first graders to remember that they did not have to raise their hand during our conversation. Here are the rules that they came up with for our discussion.
This week in math we worked on balancing equations. We learned that the equal sign means that both sides are the same. We made predictions about weather the equations were true or false. According to Grayson, "This is my funnest math ever!"
Today started a brand new marking period. We have two new TASS skills. Today we worked on thinking fluently. We used fluent thinking to solve problems in many ways. You can think fluently at home too!!
Despite teaching this almost every day in kindergarten it seems that first graders still need work on punctuation and correct capitalization. After looking at our opinion writing we noticed that we are still having trouble remembering where to put periods and when to put a capital. Today we fixed my writing and then practiced on our own. Here is the sentence song to remind us!!! We finished our descriptive reports and shared them with our friends. We worked on giving compliments, and suggestions to each writer. We are very proud of our hard work! We are finished up the first marking period with graphing. The first graders are really enjoying this. They love collecting data and creating their own graphs. We are working on creating bar graphs, pictographs and tally charts. I was surprised to learn the first graders needed to label the bar graph (title, 2 labels on the axis, numbers and topics). They also need to be able to create a title and key for a pictograph. They are going a great job with this!! On Halloween we got to graph Skittles. Here we are working hard.
Here is our class on Halloween! We had a blast! Thank you to our room parents for organizing such a great party and all the parents who came to help out! |
