If you are looking for something fun to do with your first grader that is math related look no further!!! Greg Tang has created a great resource (and contest) that you can use at home.
Here is the link to his website! http://gregtangmath.com/newyears Today we learned about the words compare and contrast. When we compare we identify what is alike. When we contrast we identify what is different. When we compare we use the word and to link the two topics together. When we contrast we use but to tell the difference. Today we compared and contrasted two characters. You can compare and contrast characters at home.
Today we reviewed the double facts. We know that these are facts we should memorize or know just like that! We used doubles to solve word problems. Here is an example where knowing doubles made it easier to solve. Here is a video you can watch to practice your doubles! This week we worked on solving word problems. We used the part-part-whole strategy to solve problems. Below is an example of how we used the strategy to solve a problem. First we find the whole number and put a box around it. Then we put a circle around the parts. Then we fill in the number bonds and use pictures or a number line to help us figure out the missing addend.
Today we reviewed verbs. We remembered that verbs are words that describe actions. We acted out different verbs. We noticed that some of the verbs go together. We sorted the verbs. We put the verbs in order from the strongest verb to the weakest verb. We learned that there are shades of differences with synonyms.
